Stupid Is As Stupid Does

People in authority have banned To Kill A Mockingbird and Huckleberry Finn from Virginia libraries for their use of the epithet “nigger,” without ever once asking themselves how the characters in those novels act in relation to the characters who must bear the stain of those racial slurs.

  1. Funny (and wise) that you should mention Beatty. I just finished reading all of Andrea Wulf’s *The Invention of Nature*, about Alexander von Humboldt, and was flipping through my Kindle for something else to read. I *almost* started Beatty’s *The Sellout*, but chose Bill Beverly’s novel *Dodgers* instead. I’m going to stick with Beverly’s novel about a young man who fails his job as a drug-house lookout and gets sent on an assassination mission as a kind of punishment but, trust me, Beatty’s book is next on my list! Thanks for writing!

  2. I just finished Dodgers and it’s wonderful to see a master at work. As for the book ban, I live in northern VA (metro DC) and we’re not banning the book here. It’s just one backward county far from here with one unenlightened parent. This is how rumors get started.

  3. I am *enjoying* *Dodgers* so far! If my own book can come close to that standard, it will do well. I am also glad to know that not everyone in VA is losing her mind. (If you read *The Guardian* long enough, that’s the impression of America you get.)
