Lost And Found

Wikipedia tells me, and I am delighted to report it here, that the long-lost British warship HMS Terror, which disappeared during the Franklin Expedition to find the Northwest Passage in 1846, has been found on the southern coast of King William Island, in the middle of Terror Bay.  You might recall that almost two years ago, as I recorded here, the Terror‘s sister ship, the Erebus, was also found nearby.

Since, for years, no one could discover how the ships were lost, speculation abounded about what happened to the crews.  Novelist Dan Simmons extensively researched the history of the Franklin Expedition and concocted a cracking-good horror novel called The Terror out of it.  That story is still well worth a read, even if you believe, as is likely, the crew actually perished while trying to turn the Terror around and head back home.
