Katherine Dunn, author of Geek Love (1989), one of the quirkiest, most-endearing family novels of all time, has died at the age of seventy.
Oh, man. Dunn wrote other novels, but she will always be known for her tale of Al and Lil Binewski, who raise a circus family of freaks. A wonderful novel of being inside and outside, of belonging and being outcast, of being bizarre and being normal. Dunn’s book has many ancestors, going as far back as Tod Browning’s 1932 film, Freaks, and many descendants, including Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (2007).
A tremendous loss for the world of fiction, but what a marvelous book she left for us to remember her by.
